EXAMINATIONS FOR

CERTIFIED LEGAL SECRETARY SPECIALIST (CL§)


QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum five years of law-related experience

Waivers allowed: (No cumulation of waivers)

3 years for 4-year degree or professional certification

2 years for 2-year degree

EXAMINATION FEE: $35 members; $75 nonmembers (due 30 days before exam)

Examinations are given at annual meetings of Legal Secretaries International Inc., and at other times for a minimum of ten examinees. Testing begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 1:30 p.m. on the day before the meeting seminars are held, or as otherwise scheduled. Each section is 1 hour 20 minutes, with a ten-minute break between each section.

The Certified Legal Secretary Specialist: Business Law Examination consists of questions regarding business law and procedures, as well as secretarial knowledge, grammar, and ethics. Additional resource is the Uniform Commercial Code.

The Certified Legal Secretary Specialist: Civil Litigation Examination consists of questions regarding civil litigation as well as general secretarial knowledge, grammar and ethics. Additional resource materials are: United States Constitution; Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Appellate Procedure, and Evidence.

The Certified Legal Secretary Specialist: Criminal Law Examination consists of sections regarding criminal law and procedures, general secretarial knowledge, grammar, and ethics. Additional resources are the Barcharts® for Criminal Law and for Criminal Procedure (www.barcharts.com).

The Certified Legal Secretary Specialist: Executive Legal Secretary Examination consists of questions regarding duties of a legal secretary, including general secretarial knowledge, grammar, and ethics; geared to a legal secretary in a small legal office, for an executive, or involved in management or administration, especially for those who have many years of experience.

The Certified Legal Secretary Specialist: Intellectual Property Examination consists of questions regarding Intellectual Property law and procedures, including copyright, trademark and patent, general secretarial knowledge, grammar, and ethics. Additional resources include Code of Federal Regulations, United States Code Annotated, and information furnished by United States Patent Office.

The Certified Legal Secretary Specialist: Probate Examination consists of questions regarding probate law and procedures, as well as general secretarial knowledge, grammar, and ethics. Additional resource is the Uniform Probate Code.

The Certified Legal Secretary Specialist: Real Estate Examination consists of questions on real estate law and procedures, secretarial knowledge, grammar, and ethics.
